Special Farming Practices

Finca Santa Elena, owned by the passionate duo Samuel and Paula, is a testament to blending heritage with innovation.

Named after Saint Elena Santilopa, the patron saint of lost and forgotten things, the farm’s mission is to “rediscover” Colombia’s rich coffee heritage. This is reflected in their revival of traditional varieties like Caturra and Bourbon, alongside rare and exotic coffees such as SL28, Chiroso, Laurina, and Geisha, offering a unique and diverse flavour profile.

Finca Santa Elena blends time-honored practices with cutting-edge techniques, including sustainable methods, advanced technology, and hand-picking, ensuring exceptional quality. Samuel’s experimentation with fermentation and drying methods further enhances the coffee’s fruity flavours, delivering high-quality coffees that reflect the farm’s passion for innovation and excellence.

Triple Sustainability at Santa Elena

By buying Paula 20 Brix, you directly contribute to Finca Santa Elena’s triple sustainability efforts—ensuring every cup of coffee is not only delicious but also ethically impactful:

Environmental Sustainability

Finca Santa Elena is committed to eco-friendly farming practices that protect biodiversity and pave the way for a greener future.

Samuel collaborates closely with the University of Antioquia, welcoming students to undertake research projects aimed at improving farm operations. One such initiative is the development of a bioreactor that transforms organic farm waste—like coffee cherry shells and mule manure—into biogas.

To combat pests, the farm avoids harmful pesticides, opting for natural solutions.

For instance, water traps placed under coffee plants effectively control the coffee borer beetle (broca), while leaf rust (roya) is managed using organic foliar products created in the farm’s biorefineries. Cut trees are left to naturally decompose, enriching the soil and preventing erosion.

The farm also prioritizes water conservation by preserving three natural springs, sharing clean water with neighbors, and employing efficient drying techniques such as sun drying, which replaces traditional heat-based methods.

By purchasing Paula 20 Brix, you directly support these sustainability efforts, ensuring every cup of coffee contributes to a healthier planet.

Social Sustainability

Finca Santa Elena is deeply committed to community well-being and social equality.

In an industry traditionally dominated by men, Finca Santa Elena champions gender equality by empowering rural women to take on key roles. This not only fosters innovation but also boosts coffee production in Ciudad Bolívar, where Finca Santa Elena is located.

Since coffee is a seasonal crop, many pickers migrate across the country, moving from region to region with the harvest. As they stay at each location for only a few weeks, worker accommodations are often of low quality. However, this is not the case at Finca Santa Elena.

Samuel and Paula host workers in comfortable housing next to their home, providing competitive wages, large, healthy meals, and accommodations that meet international standards. This arrangement fosters a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere where workers are treated with respect and dignity.

Economic Sustainability

The entire Santa Elena staff can expect competitive compensation, with special consideration for the extra care required to harvest lower-yield exotic coffees. This commitment ensures ethical and equitable practices throughout the farm.

To conclude, every cup of coffee from Finca Santa Elena contributes to this supportive and inclusive environment, uplifting both workers and the surrounding community. With every sip, you empower people and support a brighter future.

“Mi Casa Es Tu Casa”

Paula and Samuel embody the warmth of Colombian hospitality, welcoming every visitor as part of their family – literally the meaning of “My house is your house”.

Samuel often admirably says, “Paula knows it all,” as she expertly manages the administrative side of the business while ensuring everything on the farm runs smoothly.

Together, they create an inviting atmosphere where passion for coffee meets genuine connection.
